Kiva and the Haiti Solar Oven Project
2009/2010
Kiva (kiva.org) empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.
The Haiti Solar Oven Project (HSOP) is a teaching/training program that distributes high-quality solar ovens for pasteurizing water and cooking to people in Haiti. Their goal is to help stop the systemic problems of hunger, poverty, and environmental destruction caused by deforestation.

freedom from hunger
2006/2007
Established
in 1946, Freedom
from Hunger is recognized for fighting
hunger with innovative self-help programs. Throughout
their program's history, they have been guided by
evidence of impact, scientific rigor and our commitment
to helping families achieve food security for the
long term.
They began
as Meals for Millions, the organization that
developed and introduced Multi-Purpose Food, a high-protein
powdered food supplement still used today in relief
efforts around the world. In the 1970s, they began
implementing Applied Nutrition Programs, focusing
almost exclusively on the health and nutrition of
mothers and children. In 1988, Freedom from Hunger
developed the world's first integrated microcredit/health
and nutrition education program. Today, their Credit
with Education program is serving nearly 400,000
families in some of the poorest countries on earth.
The MOTL
jog-a-thon raised $10,558 for
this organization.

Amazing
Grace Children's Home - Eikenhof About 10km past Southgate
is this beautiful home where there are 30 children
aged from 2 to 18 years old. The home is well run but
still needs a lot of development and assistance. On
the list are: Cot mattresses, a music system, swimming
towels, face cloths, school books, school uniforms
(R12 000), a few tons of rubble needs to be removed
so that they can plant veggies, a children’s
table for little ones to sit at, computers, balls,
a netball post, a swimming teacher, any school goodies,
soccer boots and clothes.
Blessed
place of Safety - Berea Isabel Ndlovu takes care of 14 little ones aged
from 9 months to 9 years with love, grace and what
charity others have to offer. She is being evicted
from the home in Berea at the end of February and they
therefore need a place to stay urgently, along with
essentials such as nappies, clothes, toys, food, school
fees, really needs some commitments of ongoing support.
Some of the kids are Aids orphans and some are children
of sex-workers.
Projects in
Mpumalanga - There are
5 projects in Mpumalanga. Read more about these on
the web site www.solsa.org or
contact Rasada directly for more information. For the
Mpumalaga projects you can donate clothes, computers
, any kind of stationery - pens, sharpeners, files,
notebooks, crayons, etc or anything that can be used
for skills training and sustainable development. There
are many interesting projects we are working on but
the distance takes a different kind of participation,
either Money or Fundraising or travel. All things can
be delivered to Norwood, we will ensure that they reach
the project of your choice see contact us for details.

playpumps international
2004/2005
We invite you to join our final fundraiser
of the year on the morning of May 20th in the P.E. park!
The fundraiser will raise money for a well in South
Africa. Sarah Smith, the owner of our school, heard
about the need for wells in rural South Africa and asked
the PTO of our school if we would be interested in taking
on this project.
The
MOTL jog-a-thon raised $20,154 for
this organization.
The average person in South Africa
has to walk 2-5 kms every day to the closest river
or pond to get their water, which takes up to 4-5 hours
every day. In 1999, a private organization came up
with an innovative design that harnesses the energy
of children in order to work their pump. Their "playpump"
couples a low-maintenance pump with a roundabout (or
merry-go-round) on which children can play. As the roundabout
rotates, water gets pumped from a borehole to a water
storage tank. Each "roundabout playpump" is
capable of providing water to 2,500 people. Tapping
the energy of children at play, the pumps generate
about 1,400 liters of water per hour. The cost of each
playpump is about $9,000.

The PTO of MOTL will be having a Jog-a-Thon
on Friday, May 20th to raise as much as we can to go
towards a pump. If you or your company would like to
donate money beyond the pledge money, we will include
the name of the organization and more information with
the pledge form so you can use it for your taxes.
We would like to teach our children
the importance of volunteering to help others that are
not as fortunate. A Jog-a-Thon is a way that each child
can be actively involved in helping. Each child will
be receiving a Pledge Form so they can get pledges or
donations from friends or family members. We will have
the Jog-a-Thon for the preschoolers at the Lake I yard
on the morning of May 20th. The elementary students
will have their Jog-a-Thon at the local park that we
use for P.E. on the morning of May 20th.
We would love parent volunteers to
help us count the laps that the children make and to
hand out water cups to the children. We would also appreciate
donations of water bottles. Volunteer sign-up sheets
will be placed in the sign-in books during the second
week of May.
THANK YOU in advance for your help!
Let's make this a great fundraiser! |
