Our Story
Montessori on the Lake is nestled in the serenity of nature, a tranquil lakeside academic haven in Lake Forest, California. Our first classroom doors in 1988, and for 36 years we have been a proud part of the Orange County community - bringing together community members, family and teachers.
Beyond the broad range of curriculum and passionate teachers, students thrive at Montessori on the Lake because we build partnerships with each of our families to fuel a love of learning. Our priority will always be our students, their education, and their growth.

Why Montessori?
Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, the Montessori approach is to emphasize a child-centered, hands-on learning environment. Advantages associated with the Montessori method:
Individualized Learning
Curriculum is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each student, allowing them to progress at their own speed.
Self-Directed Learning
Promotes independence and self-motivation. Children are encouraged to choose their own activities and work independently, fostering a sense of responsibility and self-discipline.
Holistic Development
Development of intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects of a child. Curriculum is designed to address all aspects of a child's growth, promoting well-rounded individuals.
Real-life Skills
Incorporates practical life skills into the curriculum, such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening. These activities teach practical skills and also contribute to the development of concentration, coordination, and independence.
Peace and Cooperation
Classrooms incorporate principles of peace education, teaching children conflict resolution, empathy, and cooperation. This contributes to the development of social skills and a positive classroom environment.
Hands-on Learning
Classrooms are equipped with specially designed materials encouraging hands-on, interactive learning. Children develop a deeper understanding of concepts through sensory experiences and physical engagement
Mixed-Age Classrooms
Classrooms have mixed-age groups, allowing younger children to learn from older peers and older children to reinforce their learning by teaching younger ones. This promotes a sense of community and collaboration.
Respect for the Child
Children viewed as capable and competent individuals. This approach emphasizes treating children with respect, fostering their natural curiosity, and allowing them to take an active role in their own education.
Focus on Process over Product
Process of learning is valued more than the end result. The emphasis is on the journey of discovery and the joy of learning rather than simply achieving a specific outcome.
Real-life Challenges
Critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability, are seen as valuable assets that prepare children for future challenges and lifelong learning.
