PHILOSOPHY

We believe in nurturing each child to become respectful, intelligent, caring members of the broader community.

Why We Love Montessori

The Montessori approach to education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori to emphasize a child-centered, hands-on learning environment. There are several advantages associated with the Montessori method:

Individualized Learning ● Montessori education recognizes that each child learns at their own pace. Curriculum is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each student, allowing them to progress at their own speed.

Hands-on Learning ● Montessori classrooms are equipped with specially designed materials that encourage hands-on, interactive learning. This approach helps children develop a deeper understanding of concepts through sensory experiences and physical engagement.

Self-Directed Learning ● Montessori education promotes independence and self-motivation. Children are encouraged to choose their own activities and work independently, fostering a sense of responsibility and self-discipline.

Mixed-Age Classrooms ● Montessori classrooms typically have mixed-age groups, allowing younger children to learn from older peers and older children to reinforce their learning by teaching younger ones. This setup promotes a sense of community and collaboration.

Holistic Development ● The Montessori method focuses on the holistic development of the child, including intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects. The curriculum is designed to address all aspects of a child's growth, promoting well-rounded individuals.

Respect for the Child ● Montessori educators view children as capable and competent individuals. The approach emphasizes treating children with respect, fostering their natural curiosity, and allowing them to take an active role in their own education.

Real-life Skills ● Montessori education incorporates practical life skills into the curriculum, such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening. These activities not only teach practical skills but also contribute to the development of concentration, coordination, and independence.

Focus on Process over Product ● Montessori values the process of learning more than the end result. The emphasis is on the journey of discovery and the joy of learning rather than simply achieving a specific outcome.

Emphasis on Peace and Cooperation ● Montessori classrooms often incorporate principles of peace education, teaching children conflict resolution, empathy, and cooperation. This contributes to the development of social skills and a positive classroom environment.

Preparation for Real-life Challenges ● The skills and values instilled in Montessori education, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability, are seen as valuable assets that prepare children for future challenges and lifelong learning.

At Montessori on the Lake, we strive to create high quality programs based on all of these principles administered by caring and committed educators. We realize that compatibility varies based on the learning style of each child and work to be the best partners for each of our families.

Giving Back

Our school holds an annual Jog-A-Thon each May to raise money for a charitable organization that inspires us to help people in need. Originally chaired in 2005 by long time parent and former director Stacey Constantian, we are proud to uphold this tradition. In researching organizations to support, we learned that most charities use 50% or more of their earnings for things other than supporting their cause, so our focus is on special organizations that use donated funds to directly benefit the recipients. Through this fundraiser, students learn the value of giving back and the impact charity has in the community.

In addition to the Jog-A-Thon, our middle school classroom participates in student fundraising to supplement the costs of their annual extended trip. This not only makes it more affordable for families to participate, it gives the students a sense of fulfillment and extra excitement when preparing to build lifelong memories while bringing studies to life!
